My name is Megan. I live in Sydney with hubby Adam and 3 beautiful daughters – Imogen, Lexie and Emily. Our middle daughter Lexie came into this world almost 4 years ago and from that very moment, our lives changed.
On Wednesday 1st June 2016, prior to Lexie’s first birthday our entire world was turned upside down when we finally received the news Lexie was diagnosed with Smith Lemli Opitz Syndrome, a rare genetic condition.
Before Lexie was born, we never knew the struggles of living with a neurotypical child, or should I say living for a child with complex additional needs.
Our days are long and our weekly schedules filled with therapies and medical appointments. We have seen and been to the lowest of lows – diagnosis, devastating medical results and watching your child go under anaesthesia. Walking through those hospital doors and not knowing what you will be told or when you will be going home.
The joy, love and pure adoration we have for our little girl far outweighs these lows. Lexie has opened our eyes to a whole new way of living. Those little milestones are so dearly celebrated – a nod to indicate she wants a toy or a sign to indicate she has finished her custard.
These things mean the world to us. She has made our family so wonderful. She has shown us how to be compassionate and empathetic toward others. She has taught us what is really important
– love and family. We simply adore her.
